Walking the Wetlands

Video showing Cardiff wetlands reed bed blowing in the breeze.

When I’m not working, I often like to go walking, but I don’t necessarily need to go far to clear my head. One of the places I often go for a few minutes is the Cardiff Bay Wetland Reserve, just a short distance from the busyness of Cardiff Bay. I remember this area when it was abandoned mud flats in the 1970s and 80s when trade into Cardiff docks had dwindled to nothing.

Nowadays it’s a lovely freshwater wetland, with over 180 species of birds spotted here, many stopping over on their migration south. I often see Crested Grebes, Reed Warblers, Herons and Cormorants, along with the ubiquitous coots, mallards and swans.

Today is World Wetlands Day and it’s a reminder of how important wetland ecosystems are to biodiversity.

Wetlands are found across the world - where’s your nearest? And where do you go to escape for a few minutes?
